The Military Operations Department announced on Thursday the arrest of Major General Mohammed Kanjo Hassan in the village of Khirbet al-Ma'za in the Tartous countryside. He is responsible for the field courts in the "Sednaya" military prison.
Kanjo is accused of playing a major role in issuing thousands of death sentences and long prison sentences against detainees since the outbreak of peaceful protests in Syria in 2011, where he served as the military prosecutor general in the field court.
According to testimonies of defected officers, he was accused of colluding with the security services to fabricate charges aimed at accelerating the issuance of death sentences against detainees, including civilians and military personnel accused of attempting to defect or based on their sectarian affiliations.
The arrest came as part of the Military Operations Department's moves, in cooperation with the General Security Service, to pursue groups of the ousted Bashar al-Assad regime that refused to hand over their weapons, especially since most of those groups consist of officers and elements involved in war crimes against humanity.
The arrest of the notorious military judge came a day after fourteen policemen were killed in an ambush by Kanjo's supporters during an attempt to arrest him in his hometown of Khirbet al-Ma'za.
