Austria gives 2.8 million euros to UNHCR in support of Syria

The Austrian Foreign Ministry announced on Friday that it has allocated an additional 2.8 million euros in humanitarian aid to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to support the situation in Syria, according to Die Presse.

This move comes after the fall of the decades-long Assad regime, as the funds will be directed from the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) to provide humanitarian aid in affected areas inside Syria.

These efforts aim to improve living conditions locally, reduce migration flows to Europe and Austria, and provide safe opportunities for the return of displaced people.

Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg said in a press statement: "The civil war and the authoritarian Assad regime have pushed Syria into a catastrophic humanitarian crisis.

In light of this critical situation, it is essential that we provide urgent assistance to those affected on the ground, because any unrest in Syria will have repercussions that will be felt in Europe sooner or later."

The statement indicated that Austria has provided about 28 million euros in humanitarian aid to Syria and its neighboring countries this year alone, confirming its continued commitment to supporting regional humanitarian efforts.
