The Syrian Network for Human Rights documented that no less than 14,843 death sentences were issued by military field courts in Syria from March 2011 to August 2023.
The monitoring group stated that no less than 6,971 sentences were reduced to prison/temporary detention or life imprisonment with hard labor, while the death penalty was carried out against 7,872 other people, including 114 children, 26 women, and 2,021 military personnel, all of whom had their bodies not handed over to their families, and their families were not notified of their execution in a proper manner.
SNHR confirmed that no less than 2% of those sentenced to death by military field courts survived, while the death penalty was applied to thousands of others, stressing that the death penalty in Syrian laws was exploited by the Assad regime to eliminate its opponents.
