Homs: Volunteers clean the area around Khalid bin al-Walid Mosque

Civil society, represented by a group of volunteers, took the initiative to clean Khalid bin al-Walid Mosque, one of the most prominent historical landmarks in the central city of Homs, which was severely damaged by the bombing of the ousted regime of Bashar al-Assad.

The mosque, located in the Khalidiya neighborhood, has a special status among local visitors and those coming from outside Syria, as it contains the shrine of the companion Khalid bin al-Walid, making it a prominent religious and historical symbol in the region.

The volunteer group, made up of Homs residents, began an initiative to clean and repair the mosque and its surroundings, as part of a series of activities aimed at restoring the city to its former glory after the destruction caused by the war.

Muhannad Obeibo, one of the volunteers, explained in his interview with the Anadolu Agency that the work to clean Khalid bin al-Walid Mosque came in the context of interest in cleaning and restoring symbolic places in the city, saying: "We attach special importance to cleaning this mosque because it is the most important landmark in the region, and we aim to preserve historical symbols and highlight their beauty."

Obeibo pointed out that the destruction in Homs has displaced many of its residents, but many Syrians are eager to return to their homes as the city is liberated and stabilized. "We are the people of this region, and if we do not take the initiative to clean our homes and public places, our city will not appear in a way that encourages return and stability," he added.
