The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, arrived in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Thursday, in the first visit by a head of state since the fall of the regime of ousted President Bashar al-Assad on December 8.
Video footage broadcast by the Qatari Emiri Diwan showed the moments when the Syrian interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, received the Emir of Qatar upon his arrival at Damascus International Airport, before heading to the People's Palace.
The visit, which is also the first of its kind for the Emir of Qatar in more than 14 years, comes hours after Ahmed al-Sharaa was declared president of the Syrian Arab Republic during the transitional phase.
Qatar is one of the most prominent countries that supported the Syrian revolution after it broke out in 2011, and it was the only country that maintained a Syrian embassy represented by the opposition.
Last week, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani arrived in the capital, Damascus, where he met with al-Sharaa at the People's Palace .
The Qatari Foreign Minister said during a joint press conference with al-Sharaa: "We are on the cusp of a new phase in the history of Syria, and Qatar extends its hand to the Syrians for partnership," noting that the situation in Syria requires the need to consider lifting sanctions on the country as soon as possible.
On Sunday morning, December 8, Syrian opposition factions entered the capital, Damascus, and took control of it, with the withdrawal of regime forces from public institutions and streets, thus ending a 61-year era of Baath Party rule and 53 years of Assad family rule.
