270,000 Syrians have returned home since Assad fall

The representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Syria, Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, confirmed on Friday that 270,000 Syrian refugees have returned to their country after the fall of the Assad regime on December 8.

Llosa said that "270,000 Syrian refugees have returned to their country since the fall of the Assad regime, while a much larger number of them are planning to return next year," explaining that more than a quarter of Syrian refugees are planning to return within the next 12 months to rebuild their lives.

He added that the biggest obstacles facing return are concerns related to housing, property rights, security, access to basic services, and economic difficulties.

The UN official confirmed that more than 60 percent of refugees want to visit Syria before making a final decision on returning.

According to UN statistics, more than 13 million Syrians have been forcibly displaced from their towns and cities due to the war, while the total number has reached 7.2 million internally displaced persons, and 6.5 million refugees and asylum seekers in different countries.
