Initiative to uncover detainees fate, Zaman al-Wasl launches search engine includes 13,000 names

Zaman al-Wasl launched an initiative to reveal the fate of missing detainees through a search engine that includes more than 13,000 names

In a qualitative step aimed at shedding light on the tragedy of missing detainees in the Syrian regime's prisons, Zaman Alwasl  launched an unprecedented initiative that allows searching for the fate of detainees through a search engine that includes the names of more than 13,300 people who died in detention centers and military hospitals between 2011 and 2024, including 1,108 detainees from Sednaya Prison.

The engine also includes the names of more than 1,000 detainees who were arrested before and after the 1982 Hama massacre and executed in Tadmur Prison, in an attempt to reveal the fate of victims who remained unaccounted for for decades.

How were the names collected?

Following the fall of the regime, specialized teams were able to photograph official documents containing the names of the dead in Sednaya Prison and the security branches, while taking care to leave the original documents in their places to ensure their preservation by the competent authorities.

The names were then rewritten and organized to be published in Zaman al-Wasl newspaper search engines, allowing the families of detainees to search for the fate of their relatives.

Importance of the initiative

Documenting crimes: This data reveals the extent of violations in the regime’s prisons and military hospitals.

Giving hope to families: The families of detainees can search for their loved ones and know their fate.

Legal evidence: These documents constitute an important database for future trials against those involved in crimes against humanity.

The new search engine is a crucial step towards achieving justice and revealing the truth, and is part of ongoing efforts to document crimes and break the silence around one of the greatest tragedies of modern times.
