Hamas ‘eager’ to implement Gaza ceasefire deal, ‘oblige’ Israel to respect it

Hamas spokesman Abdul Latif al-Qanou says the group wants to prevent the Gaza ceasefire agreement from falling through.

“We are not concerned with the collapse of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, and we are eager to implement it and oblige the occupation to fully implement it,” he said in a statement.

He said mediators are exerting pressure to complete the full implementation of the agreement, oblige Israel to abide by the humanitarian protocol, and resume the exchange process on Saturday.

Al-Qanou stressed that the language of threats and intimidation used by Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu does not serve the implementation of the ceasefire agreement.

No intention to end Gaza war: Israeli minister

Israeli newspaper Maariv reports that Avi Dichter, Israel’s agriculture minister, has said he has “difficulty seeing any other option” than the release of at least three captives on Saturday, as well as the return to fighting later.

“We want to return all the hostages in the agreement as quickly as possible. This is one of the war goals we set, along with the other two goals. There is no intention to end the war before all the goals have been achieved,” he is quoted as saying.

He claimed that the destruction of Hamas’s military infrastructure has largely been achieved but that “the collapse of the government’s capacity is a goal that has not yet been achieved”.

Hamas officials say Israel has violated key provisions of the agreement, prompting it to call off the release of three more captives scheduled to take place on Saturday.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has threatened to resume the war on Gaza unless Hamas releases the captives.
