Security operation ends in Syria's Sanamayn after neutralizing last armed group

Syrian security forces have ended their operations in the city of Sanamayn in the southern Daraa province after taking control of the last stronghold of armed groups, as part of a campaign launched by the government to dismantle the remnants of the former regime.

Al Jazeera network quoted security sources as saying that the General Security Department forces affiliated with the Ministry of Interior and another affiliated with the Syrian Ministry of Defense were able to take control of the last stronghold of armed groups in the city of Sanamayn in the Daraa countryside.

The sources explained that a sniper affiliated with these groups was captured while targeting fighters from the Ministries of Interior and Defense from a civilian building.

A medical source reported that the clashes with the armed groups resulted in the deaths of about 19 people, most of whom were members of the General Security and the Ministry of Interior, in addition to two civilians and 10 wounded.

The city of Sanamayn has witnessed violent clashes over the past two days between the Internal Security Forces and armed groups described by the authorities as "outlaws."

Security sources said that "these groups are involved in committing massacres against the people and have fortified themselves inside residential areas, which necessitated cautious intervention to avoid further civilian casualties."

Tensions began after a midnight curfew was imposed, following the killing of three members of the Himed group and the wounding of others, including civilians, by unknown gunmen.

The Syrian Ministry of Interior intensified its security operations in various governorates, targeting remnants of the regime of ousted President Bashar al-Assad and elements involved in arms smuggling and inciting chaos.

Since the overthrow of the Assad regime, Syria has witnessed intensive security operations to dismantle the remnants of the previous apparatuses.

The Syrian administration announced last January the appointment of Ahmed al-Sharaa as president of the transitional phase, in addition to dissolving the old security apparatuses and armed factions, and canceling the previous constitution.
