Maysa Sabreen, the governor of the Central Bank of Syria, told Reuters on Thursday that she had submitted her resignation, less than three months after assuming her position on an interim basis.
A Syrian official and a source in the financial sector in Syria said that a replacement for Maysa Sabreen is expected to be appointed once the new government is formed in the coming days.
Experts say that economist Abdelkader Hasria is the most prominent candidate to take over the position.
The new Syrian administration appointed Maysa Sabreen, the former deputy governor of the bank, as governor of the Central Bank of Syria at the end of last December. She is the first woman to lead the institution in its more than 70-year history, replacing Mohammed Issam Hazima, who was appointed governor by ousted President Bashar al-Assad in 2021.

Prior to her new position, Sabreen had served as first deputy governor of the Central Bank of Syria since October 2018.
Maysa Sabreen was also a member of the board of directors of the Damascus Securities Exchange, representing the Central Bank, before assuming her new position. She has over 15 years of professional experience in the financial and banking fields.
Sabreen holds a bachelor's and master's degree in accounting from Damascus University, as well as a certified public accountant certificate, which qualified her to assume prominent leadership positions. She served as Director of the Government Commission for Banks and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Damascus Securities Exchange before assuming her current position.
