Lebanese prime minister warns of renewed military escalation in south

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam warned on Friday of a potential resurgence of military operations between Israel and Hezbollah along the country’s southern border.

According to a statement from his media office, Salam held a phone call with Army Commander Gen. Rudolph Hikal to assess the situation in the south following Israeli airstrikes.

The prime minister instructed the army chief to swiftly conduct investigations to determine the parties responsible for launching rockets toward Israel, stressing that such actions "threaten Lebanon’s security and stability."

Salam called for intensified efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible and to refer them to the judiciary, according to the statement.

He also emphasized the importance of preventing further "reckless actions" and reiterated the need for the Lebanese army to continue its measures to ensure that weapons remain under state control.

Earlier on Friday, Israel claimed that two rockets had been fired from Lebanon toward Israel. One was intercepted, while the other landed within Lebanese territory.

No casualties or material damage were reported, and the Lebanese group Hezbollah denied any involvement in the attack.

A fragile ceasefire had been in place in Lebanon since November, ending months of cross-border warfare between Israel and Hezbollah, which escalated into a full-scale conflict in September.

Lebanese authorities reported over 1,250 Israeli violations of the ceasefire, including at least 100 fatalities and more than 330 injuries.

Under the ceasefire deal, Israel was supposed to fully withdraw from southern Lebanon by Jan. 26, but the deadline was extended to Feb. 18 after it refused to comply. It still maintains a military presence at five border outposts.
