Document reveals glimpse into the fate of 2,500 detainees during Hafez al-Assad's era

Zaman al-Wasl obtained photos of a notebook known as the "Death Book," belonging to one of the General Intelligence Directorate offices in Damascus. It contains 2,540 names of detainees during the Hafez al-Assad era, the oldest dating back to the 1980s and the most recent dating back to 1997.

The notebook, which was photographed in its entirety and published via the link:

It does not contain dates of arrest or charges, making the information contained therein subject to analysis and inference.

However, an examination of the names revealed that the vast majority of detainees were forcibly disappeared and killed in Assad's prisons.

Among the names listed in the records, Ghassan Zeitoun recognized his father's name, Adnan Qassem Zeitoun, who was arrested in 1997 in Quneitra Governorate by the regime's intelligence services. His fate remains unknown to this day.

Does the name of any of your relatives appear in the "Death Book"? Contact Zaman Al-Wasl for assistance in documenting and uncovering the fate of the victims.
