Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara'a stressed that the continued Israeli presence on Syrian territory poses a permanent threat to security and stability in the region.
This came during a presidential summit held via videoconference on Friday with the leaders of France, Lebanon, Cyprus, and the Prime Minister of Greece.
According to a statement issued by the Syrian presidency, the summit discussed a number of issues of common interest, including border security, regional threats, economic sanctions imposed on Syria, ways to enhance regional cooperation, and Israeli violations in the region.
Al-Shara'a noted that Syria faces major security challenges, especially on its southern border, stressing that defending the country "is not an option, but a necessity."
The summit also addressed issues related to strengthening cooperation in the fields of energy, transportation, and trade, in addition to supporting political and economic reforms in Syria.
The Syrian president emphasized that his country has taken tangible steps towards internal reforms, whether political, economic, or social, with the aim of building a strong and stable state.
The participating leaders emphasized the importance of achieving practical progress on human rights, while emphasizing the need to intensify international efforts to support reconstruction in Syria, based on what was agreed upon during the Brussels Conference.
