Syrians across Syria performed the first Eid al-Fitr prayers since the fall of the regime of ousted President Bashar al-Assad at the end of last year on Monday morning.
The Eid prayer was also performed for the first time in the Square of the Unknown Soldier on Mount Qasioun, north of the capital, Damascus, with the participation of thousands of men and women.
Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra, other ministers, Grand Mufti of Syria Sheikh Osama al-Rifai, and a number of Ministry of Defense officers performed the Eid al-Fitr prayer at the prayer hall of the Presidential People's Palace in Damascus.

In a speech following the prayer, al-Sharaa said, "Syria has a long and arduous road ahead, but it possesses all the elements for construction at all levels."
Al-Sharaa added that he rejected quotas in forming the new government because political division would disrupt its work. He called on Syrians to reach consensus because, he said, not all steps would satisfy everyone.
On December 8, Syrian factions took control of Damascus, days after seizing other cities, ending 61 years of Baath Party rule and 53 years of Assad family rule.
On January 29, 2025, the Syrian government declared Sharaa as president of the country during the transitional period. The constitution was abolished, and armed factions, the regime's security services, the People's Assembly (parliament), and the Baath Party were dissolved.
On March 13, Sharaa signed a constitutional declaration defining the transitional period in the country as five years.
