Documents reveal deaths of detainees by National Defense Militia

Two documents issued by the General Secretariat of the National Defense in Syria reveal tragic details about the deaths of a number of detainees in detention centers run by the National Defense, the auxiliary militia led by Fadi Saqr, one of the regime's most prominent security forces in the Damascus area and its countryside. *First Batch – Document of February 4, 2016:

The document, signed on February 4, 2016, bears the number 122/2/M, and is addressed to the Military Police – Investigation and Prisons Branch. It responds to correspondence from the Second Military Field Court regarding five detainees who died in prison without their bodies being returned or their families being contacted:
• Diaa Muhammad al-Hajji
Born: 1996 – Damascus suburbs
Date of his name appearing: Based on a letter dated January 30, 2016
• Muhammad Saeed Mohamed Khair al-Masri
Born: 1966 – Damascus
Mother's name: Badia'a
Included in the court's letter dated January 30, 2016
• Iyad Hassan Ta'ma
Born: 1978 – Homs
Mother's name: Khadra
• Siyah Muhammad al-Omar
Born: 1997 – Raqqa
Mother's name: Ra'ida
• Bilal Muhammad Hamada

The document indicates that none of the detainees' relatives have been contacted, reflecting a deliberate attempt to withhold information about the detainees' fate from their families. This practice has been documented by numerous human rights organizations as a form of enforced disappearance.
