A general power outage in Syria due to a technical fault, with a gradual return in some governorates

Director of the state-run Electricity Establishment, announced the restoration of electricity in Homs, Hama, and Tartus, with a gradual return to the rest of the governorates. This follows a nationwide power outage caused by a technical fault late Tuesday evening.

Syria's official news agency (SANA) quoted Khaled Abu Dai as saying that efforts are underway to repair the fault and restore power as soon as possible.

Syria suffers from a severe electricity shortage, with state-provided electricity available for only two or three hours per day in most areas.

The damage to the electricity grid means that generating electricity and providing more is only part of the problem, according to a Reuters report.

The transitional government has pledged to rapidly increase electricity supplies, including through imports from Jordan and the use of floating power plants.

On March 13, Qatar began providing approved natural gas supplies to Syria via Jordanian territory, a move aimed at addressing the severe shortage in electricity production and improving the performance of the country's infrastructure.

The Qatari initiative is expected to increase the average electricity supply for Syrians to four hours per day, instead of two, helping alleviate the severe energy shortage, according to Bloomberg.
