A man was killed on Saturday when a landmine, left over from the war, exploded while plowing agricultural land in the Maarat al-Numan countryside in northern Idlib province.
The explosion completely destroyed the agricultural tractor and killed the young man instantly, according to the Civil Defense Agency.
Mines and unexploded ordnance pose a constant threat to the lives of civilians in large areas of northwestern Syria, obstructing agricultural and economic activities and preventing many from returning to their lands and homes, especially in areas that have been subjected to previous military operations.
Human rights reports indicate that remnants of bombing and mines have become a major cause of civilian injury and death, particularly among farmers and children, amid the absence of specialized mine clearance teams and a lack of funding and logistical support.
