The Syrian Coast Guard announced on Saturday that it had thwarted an escape attempt by more than 30 civilians aboard a boat attempting to leave the country through territorial waters towards a neighboring country.
The state-run news agency (SANA) reported that a Coast Guard patrol spotted the boat in territorial waters, intercepted it, and transferred it to the relevant authorities. The nationality or identity of the passengers, as well as their intended destination, had not been disclosed at the time of writing.
This incident comes at a time when the new Syrian administration, which took power after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024, is attempting to impose security stability and improve living conditions, in addition to pursuing remnants of the former regime and those involved in crimes or violations during the war years.
Despite this, the country continues to face complex challenges, including the economy, the return of refugees, and widespread poverty and unemployment. These challenges push some civilians to seek migration by any means possible, even through illegal routes that entail significant risks.
