Houthis reject Yemen's new PM

The Shiite Houthi group on Tuesday rejected the appointment of Ahmed bin Mubarak as Yemen's new prime minister.

"Bin Mubarak's appointment is a violation of the peace and partnership deal," Houthi leader Ali al-Bekheti told the pro-Houthi Yemen Agency.

He, however, declined to elaborate.

Al-Bekheti said that certain parties "still pursue the fait accompli policy, which dragged the country to tragedies and wars".

Former president Ali Abdullah Saleh's General People's Congress also rejected bin Mubarak's appointment, arguing that both Yemeni president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi and the new premier hail from southern provinces "which will cause unease among other provinces".

Earlier Tuesday, Hadi assigned bin Mubarak, the director of his office, with forming a new government.

The move is part of a deal signed with the Shiite Houthi group that aimed at ending weeks-long political standoff in the Arab Peninsula country.

The deal calls for the formation of a new government; the appointment of a nonpartisan prime minister; and the appointment of a Houthi adviser to the president.

The agreement was meant to end weeks of turmoil and clashes between Houthis and army troops, which led Sanaa to fall into the hands of Houthis.

Yemen has been dogged by political turmoil since Saleh's ouster in 2012.
