(White Helmets)- Four children were killed and 4 others injured—including 3 children and a man—on Tuesday when an unexploded ordnance detonated as children were playing in an open area in the town of Tseel, western rural Daraa.
The rescue teams responded immediately and transported 3 of the injured to the National Hospital in Daraa, one of whom is in critical condition.
War remnants continue to pose a deadly, long-term threat to civilians. These hidden dangers cause fatal explosions, inflict life-altering injuries, and obstruct the return to normal life.
Protecting civilians from this threat is a shared responsibility. It requires raising awareness across all segments of society, clearing these deadly remnants, and eliminating their risk once and for all.
Human Rights Watch issued a statement on Wednesday warning that widespread contamination by landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) continues to pose a serious obstacle to the safe return of displaced persons and hinders reconstruction and development efforts in the country.
Southern region is one of the areas in Syria most affected by ERW, with civilian casualties from mine explosions or unexploded ordnance (UXO) occurring occasionally.
