Official data from the German Ministry of the Interior showed that the number of Syrians suspected of involvement in violent crimes in 2024 reached 7,466, representing approximately 34% of the total number of refugee suspects in this type of crime. This reflects existing challenges in integration and media coverage of immigrant communities.
According to a Federal Criminal Police report, Germany recorded more than 217,000 violent crimes last year, including murder, rape, and aggravated assault. This represents a 1.5% increase over the previous year, the highest rate since 2007.
According to German media, Syrians constituted the highest percentage of refugee suspects, followed by Turks, whose percentage increased by 47.6% to 1,058 suspects. According to authorities, this increase is "expected" due to the general increase in the population of non-German origins, along with known factors affecting some segments of the immigrant population, most notably poverty, psychological trauma, and the high proportion of young males.
Commenting on the figures, Rainer Wendt, head of the German Police Union, said that what is happening is "a direct reflection of the failure of immigration policies over the past two decades," believing that the figures should prompt the formulation of unified European policies.
It is worth noting that Germany currently hosts more than 712,000 Syrians who enjoy legal protection, and approximately 1.3 million people of Syrian origin live there, 18% of whom were born in the country.
