On June 28, 2014, the first day of Ramadan, Abdul Aziz Haitham Omar Agha, a 32-year-old Syrian man, was arrested at the al-Qutayfah checkpoint in the Damascus countryside while attempting to leave the country for Turkey.
He was accompanied by his wife, two young children (one less than two months old and the other less than two years old), and three sisters. The attempt to leave was a desperate attempt to protect himself, especially since he had been arrested twice before by the Air Force Intelligence and al-Khatib branches, had lived through the siege of Eastern Ghouta until his escape in 2014, and had lost his brother in the battles of Harasta in 2012.
Despite his sisters' pleas not to arrest him as he was the only surviving brother, Abdul Aziz was taken away right before their eyes. Subsequent information indicated that he was transferred to the General Intelligence Directorate and then to the notorious Sednaya prison.
Suddenly and painfully, in 2022, while obtaining a family civil status document, it was officially revealed that Abdul Aziz had been registered as deceased on August 21, 2014, just 62 days after his arrest.
This news was devastating for his family. His father was deeply shocked and could not bear it, and he died six months later from illness. His mother, meanwhile, continues to grieve the loss and shock, having hoped for his return.
