Ebola death toll rises to 3,880

The number of deaths caused by the Ebola virus has risen to 3,880.

In a statement released Wednesday, the organization said: "The total number of confirmed, probable, and suspected cases in the West African epidemic of Ebola virus disease (EVD) reported up to the end of 5 October is 8,033 [one case in Spain not included] with 3,879 deaths [one death in the U.S. not included]"

The latest figures from the WHO record 3,924 cases and 2,210 deaths in Liberia, 2,789 cases and 879 deaths in Sierra Leone, 1,298 cases and 768 deaths in Guinea, 20 cases and eight deaths in Nigeria; and one case in Senegal and one case in the U.S.

Meanwhile, after the report was released, the first person to be diagnosed with the Ebola virus in the U.S., died, raising the Ebola death toll to 3,880.

The World Health Organization also stated that one confirmed case of Ebola virus had been reported in Spain.

The organization also reported that 232 health workers had died as a result of infection.

"There is no evidence that the Ebola virus disease epidemic in West Africa is being brought under control, though there is evidence of a decline in incidence in the districts of Lofa in Liberia, and Kailahun and Kenema in Sierra Leone," notes the WHO.
