Syrian firefighting teams continue to extinguish fires raging in Jabal al-Turkman (Turkmen Mountain) region in the northern Latakia countryside for the sixth consecutive day, amid complex climatic and geographical conditions that are hampering efforts to fully control the blazes.
A statement issued by the Civil Defense stated that the joint operations room, which includes the Ministries of Interior, Defense, Emergency and Disaster Management, Agriculture, and Foreign Affairs, as well as forest protection centers, is dividing the fire zones into sectors, isolating them, and containing the burning hotspots to prevent the spread of the fires to new areas.
The statement indicated that the teams were able to control and cool several hotspots of the fire, and open roads to reach the remaining hotspots that are still burning. It emphasized that efforts are continuing around the clock.
The Civil Defense explained that the teams face significant challenges, most notably: high temperatures, strong winds, and complex mountainous terrain that impede the movement of vehicles and slow down the pace of direct intervention.
It added that the current priority is to prevent the fires from reaching residential areas and crops, while simultaneously attempting to cool down areas that have been extinguished to prevent re-ignition.
