Zaman al-Wasl obtained an official document documenting the number of detainees in Sednaya Military Prison just hours before its liberation on December 7th. The document indicated the presence of 1,498 detainees inside the prison, including 29 individuals classified as either on "mission" or hospitalized.
However, the surprise came after the prison's liberation the following day, when only 650 detainees were found alive, according to documentation from several human rights organizations, including lawyer Michel Shammas, a member of the Defense Committee for Prisoners of Opinion and Conscience in Syria.
By calculations, the number of missing persons is 819, whose trace has not been found.
The document was signed by the prison's deputy director, Colonel Thaer Hussein, and supervised by the prison director, Brigadier General (name not mentioned in the document). It was submitted on the evening of December 7th.
It also bore the signature of Assistant Director Manhal Suleiman, responsible for the prison's document security office (department). This name had previously been mentioned in a previous document relating to employees at the same facility.
The document published by Zaman al-Wasl today is part of the official inspection log and was officially entrusted to Suleiman.
The question remains unanswered by official Syrian authorities, and no human rights organization has issued a clear statement regarding the fate of this large number of detainees: Have they been transferred?
