Syria, Lebanon to address Syrian prisoners conditions in Roumieh prison

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani announced on Sunday that he had discussed with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam ways to expedite the end of the suffering of Syrian prisoners held in Roumieh Prison, one of Lebanon's largest prisons.

In a post on the X platform, al-Shaibani explained that during the meeting, they discussed the issue of Syrian detainees in Roumieh, and agreed on "practical steps" to address their situation. He did not reveal further details or specify the location of the meeting.

The minister affirmed that the Syrian government attaches "absolute priority" to this issue, adding: "We in the Syrian government affirm our complete commitment to ending this issue as soon as possible. Some of the repercussions of the war may continue for a while, but Syrian men and women will always remain at the top of our priorities."

Roumieh Prison is located in the eastern suburbs of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, and is Lebanon's largest prison, housing more than 4,000 inmates, three times its intended capacity, according to Lebanese media reports.

The prison houses a large number of Syrians who have been detained for years without trial, in conditions described by human rights organizations as "lacking even the minimum standards of justice and legal safeguards," sparking widespread criticism both locally and internationally.
