The Jordanian Ministry of Interior announced on Sunday the cancellation of the prior security approval requirement for its citizens wishing to travel by land to Syria, effective today. This step represents a significant development in strengthening relations between the two countries.
According to what was reported by the official Al-Mamlaka TV channel, the decision allows travel through the Jaber border crossing without the need for prior approval, unless there are security obstacles, in accordance with the procedures in effect at other Jordanian border crossings.
The ministry explained in its statement that this measure aims to facilitate the movement of citizens and stimulate human and commercial exchange with its northern neighbor. It noted that the decision was officially issued by Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya and circulated in the form of an official document on local news platforms.
The decision comes a few days after an official visit by Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi to the Syrian capital, Damascus, at the head of a government delegation. During the visit, an agreement was signed to establish the "Supreme Coordination Council" between the two countries to enhance joint cooperation in various fields.
Jordan and Syria are connected by two main border crossings: the Jaber-Nassib crossing, which is currently the authorized and active crossing, and the Ramtha-Old Customs crossing, which is out of service.
The decision is expected to increase overland traffic, stimulate tourism and family visits, and facilitate the passage of trucks and trade between the two countries after years of restrictions.
