President Ahmed al-Sharaa issued a decree forming a higher committee to oversee the People's Assembly elections, headed by Mr. Mohamed Taha al-Ahmad, and including a number of prominent figures.
The committee included Hassan Ibrahim al-Daghim, Imad Yaqoub Barq, Lara Shaher Aizouqi, Nawar Elias Najma, Mohamed Ali Mohamed Yassin, Mohamed Khader Wali, Mohamed Yasser Kahala, Hanan Ibrahim al-Balkhi, Badr al-Jamous, and Anas al-Abdah.
Under the decree, the higher committee will oversee the formation of the electoral sub-committees, which will elect two-thirds of the People's Assembly members, while the remaining third will be appointed by the President of the Republic.
The decree also stipulates that the People's Assembly will consist of 150 members, distributed among the governorates according to population size, ensuring representation of the notables and intellectuals, according to criteria determined by the High Elections Committee.
The geographical distribution of the elected seats is as follows: Aleppo (20), Damascus (11), Rural Damascus (10), Homs (9), Hama (8), Latakia (6), Tartous (5), Idlib (7), Deir ez-Zor (6), Hasakah (6), Raqqa (3), Daraa (4), As-Suwayda (3), and Quneitra (3).
It is worth noting that this decree comes within the context of ongoing preparations for the upcoming People's Assembly elections, amid official emphasis on the importance of broad popular participation and ensuring the integrity and transparency of the electoral process.
