The "US-Syria Business Council" was established in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, as an independent, non-profit, and non-political organization, according to an official statement.
The council, which includes businessmen and legal and economic advisors from both sides, presents itself as a platform for "building bridges of trade and economic cooperation between Syria and the United States," under the slogan of supporting reconstruction efforts and achieving sustainable economic development, after what the statement described as "years of difficult challenges."
The council plans to organize trade delegations and investment conferences, and provide legal and tax advisory services to companies and investors, in coordination with chambers of commerce.
Council member Issam Ghreiwati described the move as the beginning of a strong economic partnership with Washington, calling for it to be viewed as part of the rebuilding of "modern" Syria. Meanwhile, Dr. Jihad Salqini, founder of FSN Telecom, considered the launch of 4G services in the north of the country by his company an indication of the direction towards building a "modern communications future."
