President Al-Sharaa, Abdi and the US envoy meet to "remove obstacles" to the merger agreement

Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa held a tripartite meeting in Damascus on Wednesday with the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi, and US envoy Thomas Barak, to "remove obstacles" to implementing the agreement to integrate the SDF into the Syrian state apparatus.

The tripartite meeting was preceded by a bilateral meeting between al-Sharaa and Barak. This is the third time that Mazloum Abdi has met with al-Sharaa.

In the first meeting, al-Sharaa and Abdi reached understandings that led to a second meeting on March 10 to integrate his forces and the institutions of the Kurdish Autonomous Administration into the Syrian state apparatus.

Sources said the tripartite meeting aims to "remove obstacles to the implementation of the agreement and introduce some amendments," noting that it was prompted by the international coalition, as well as France, which appears to have played a role in resolving the differences between the two parties.

The agreement, described as "historic" between Sharaa and Abdi, stipulates the integration of all civilian and military institutions in northeastern Syria into the Syrian state administration by the end of the year, including border crossings, airports, and oil and gas fields. Its goal is to avoid a military confrontation as much as possible.

Many of the provisions of this agreement have not yet been implemented, although small parts have been implemented, including the prisoner exchange in Aleppo and placing the predominantly Kurdish neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh under joint control between the government and Kurdish forces.

The entry of government forces into the Tishrin Dam was also implemented, but these measures were carried out through separate understandings in light of the original agreement.

Syrian Democratic Forces

The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces are considered the largest armed bloc outside the armed forces and control the oil-rich Jazira region (current production is approximately 100,000 barrels), in addition to Syria's oil production. Wheat.

The Kurdish units (with its two wings, the People's Protection Units (YPG) and the Women's Protection Units (YPJ), affiliated with the Democratic Union Party (PYD), the Syrian wing of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), form the backbone of the PYD. This party is listed as a "terrorist organization" by many countries.

In 2015, Kurdish groups established the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), joined by factions from Arab tribes and the Syriac Military Council.

Integration Agreement

On March 10, the Syrian presidency announced the signing of an agreement to integrate the SDF into Syrian state institutions, affirming the country's territorial integrity and rejecting partition.

The presidency added that Sharaa and Mazloum Abdi signed the agreement, which stipulates a ceasefire throughout Syria.

The Syrian presidency published a statement signed by both parties stating that they agreed to "integrate all civilian and military institutions in northeastern Syria into the Syrian state administration, including border crossings, the airport, and oil and gas fields."

Tishrin Dam

On April 12, Syrian army forces entered the Tishrin Dam in the eastern Aleppo countryside. To enforce security in the region, in implementation of the agreement.

The SDF and the Syrian government reached an agreement to hand over management of the dam to the central government as part of Turkish-American understandings, in coordination with the Syrian government, to halt fighting in the north of the country. Technical teams from the Syrian government will manage and operate the dam and conduct maintenance to ensure the facility's security, stabilize electricity generation, and improve it in the coming period.

The dam, under SDF control, supplies water and electricity to large areas of the Aleppo and Raqqa countrysides. After the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad's regime, it became a hotspot, subject to shelling and missile attacks.
