The Attorney General of Damascus, Hussam Khattab, stated that the investigations into the death of the young man, Youssef Mohammed al-Labbad, are being conducted with "impartiality and transparency," stressing that legal action will be taken against any party if a criminal act is proven.
In a statement to SANA during his visit to the Criminal Investigation Branch in Damascus to oversee the investigations, Khattab explained that the Public Prosecution was informed of the young man's death inside an Internal Security Forces detachment near the Umayyad Mosque. He noted that a judicial and medical committee was instructed to examine the body immediately and open an official investigation under the supervision of the Public Prosecution.
The Attorney General added that a three-member medical committee, comprising forensic doctors and specialists, was formed to examine the body and determine the cause of death. He added that investigations are still ongoing, awaiting the committee's report.
Khattab emphasized the judiciary's commitment to ensuring "justice is served with complete integrity and impartiality."
Youssef al-Labbad, a resident of the Qaboun neighborhood of Damascus, died days after returning to Syria from Germany.
According to cross-referenced sources, security personnel arrested him at the Umayyad Mosque, before he was later pronounced dead in a detention center. This sparked a wave of public outrage and calls for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and for those responsible to be held accountable.
