Protest in Raqqa against parliament election delay

Civil and political activists from the northeastern province of Raqqa protested the decision of the Supreme Committee for People's Assembly Elections to postpone the elections in the province, citing the "lack of safe conditions."

The protesters asserted that the decision violates Legislative Decree 143 of 2025 and the Constitutional Declaration, as it deprives Raqqa residents of their right to parliamentary representation and participation in drafting laws, approving budgets, and signing treaties. This constitutes a "derogation of national sovereignty and citizen equality."

They considered the opening of the People's Assembly without Raqqa "a consolidation of its departure from the unity of Syrian territory." They considered the decision to reflect deliberate political marginalization, as no body or governor representing the people of the province has been appointed to date.

The protesters demanded the cancellation of the postponement decision and the opening of alternative polling stations in Damascus, nearby governorates, or in the liberated areas of Tal Abyad and Ma'dan. They emphasized that obstructing Raqqa residents' right to vote "harms equality and national unity."
