Embezzlement in Syrian Airlines exceeds $5.75 million

The Central Authority for Supervision and Inspection has uncovered a massive electronic embezzlement case at Syrian Airlines, exceeding 65 billion Syrian pounds (approximately US$5.75 million).

This discovery comes as part of the Authority's ongoing efforts to combat corruption and recover public funds.  An investigation has been launched in cooperation with the Civil Aviation Authority.

A statement from the Authority indicated that the case is one of the largest electronic embezzlement cases, dating back to the period of the "former regime."

Preliminary audit results revealed that the significant loss of public funds resulted from several employees at the company exploiting their electronic access privileges within the central reservation system.

The illicit activities included issuing and selling airline tickets, manipulating data, and inflating financial balances, in coordination with other parties.

Based on the extent of the damage, the Authority confirmed that it has identified those responsible and taken the necessary precautionary measures against them, pending their referral to the competent judicial authorities to ensure the full recovery of the embezzled funds.

It is worth noting that the Central Authority for Supervision and Inspection recently uncovered irregularities in the mechanism for disbursing and distributing cash at a public bank, where it took immediate action, including suspending several employees and referring the violations for investigation.
