Ten civilians killed in Israeli bombing in Damascus countryside: Reports

An Israeli artillery and helicopter attack killed ten civilians, including a woman, early Friday morning in the town of Beit Jann in the Damascus countryside. The Israeli army reported that six soldiers were wounded, three of them seriously, following the clashes with residents.

State-run Al-Ekhbariah Channel reports indicate that there are still civilian victims trapped under the rubble as a result of the Israeli bombing.

This major security incident is the most significant provocative act carried out by Israel on the first anniversary of the start of the military operations that toppled Bashar al-Assad's regime on November 27, 2014.

The victims' bodies remain in the town's main mosque. Israeli media reported the arrest of wanted Syrians involved in hostile acts against Israel.

The attacks on southern Syria and the incursions into the region have been met with relative calm by the residents, who are seeking to recover from the years of war. However, according to military analysts, this incident could provoke retaliatory actions by the Israeli army and potentially spark a popular uprising in southern Syria.

The return to the 1974 ceasefire line and the status quo prior to December 8, 2024, is a demand of the new Syrian leadership, which also rejects any foreign military presence on Syrian soil. They further emphasize their rejection of turning Syria into spheres of influence or disputed cantons.

Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, Israeli forces have repeatedly violated the buffer zone in the Golan Heights, occupied more Syrian territory, and launched hundreds of airstrikes against military sites throughout Syria. Damascus has condemned these Israeli attacks and repeated incursions into Quneitra, Daraa, and the Damascus countryside, asserting that they obstruct efforts to achieve stability and constitute a violation of international law and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.
