The head of the General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs, Qutaiba Badawi, held talks with an Iraqi delegation headed by Lieutenant General Sami Abdul Hussein Radhi, advisor to the Iraqi Prime Minister, focusing on ways to improve border crossings and enhance cooperation between the two countries.
The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that the meeting, held in Damascus, discussed measures to expedite the opening of the new al-Tanf border crossing, as well as the steps the General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs intends to take to establish an alternative crossing in the al-Bukamal area.
The two sides also discussed mechanisms for modernizing and developing operations at Syrian-Iraqi border crossings, aiming to facilitate the movement of passengers and goods, boost trade, and support transportation in a way that serves shared economic interests.
Both sides affirmed the strength of bilateral relations between Syria and Iraq and the importance of continued coordination and cooperation in the field of border crossings and customs, which will positively impact the efficiency of border operations and contribute to stability and development in border regions.
The Iraqi delegation included Lieutenant General Omar Adnan Al-Waeli, Head of the Border Ports Authority, and a number of senior officials from the Iraqi customs and border crossings sectors.
These talks come within the framework of joint efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation and revitalize transit and trade, especially after the reopening of the Al-Bukamal border crossing to passenger and commercial traffic on June 14th.
