The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced on Wednesday the arrest of Anwar Nasser Hindi, who is implicated in war crimes and criminal activities during the era of the ousted regime.
In a statement posted on its Telegram channel, the ministry said that "the Internal Security Forces in Latakia Governorate (northwest) arrested Anwar Nasser Hindi after monitoring his movements, due to his proven involvement in committing war crimes against the residents of the rebel-held areas."
These crimes included "the execution of prisoners and the mutilation of the bodies of martyrs, in addition to his participation in battles in the Idlib and Hama countryside within the ranks of the former regime," according to the statement.
The Syrian Interior Ministry noted that investigations revealed that Hindi "volunteered with the sectarian Desert Hawks militia in 2014, then transferred in 2016 to the Russian-backed Naval Commandos militia."
It added that "after the overthrow of the former regime, it was discovered that he was involved in illegal activities, including drug trafficking and the distribution of counterfeit currency."
She explained that "the detainee was referred to the competent judicial authorities to complete the investigations and take the necessary legal measures against him."
From time to time, the Syrian authorities announce the arrest of individuals involved in committing serious violations against civilians during the era of the ousted regime.
On December 8, 2014, Syrian rebels seized control of the capital, Damascus, marking the end of 53 years of rule by the Assad family (Bashar and his father, Hafez).
