The Syrian Ministry of Interior thwarted an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of RPG anti-tank rounds into Lebanon.
In a statement published Wednesday on its Telegram channel, the ministry said, "The Internal Security Directorate in the Zabadani area of the Damascus countryside thwarted an attempt to smuggle a shipment of weapons destined for Lebanon."
The statement added, "Following meticulous security monitoring of the movements of those involved, the directorate carried out a well-planned ambush in the border town of Serghaya, resulting in the seizure of the shipment, which was found to contain a large quantity of RPG rounds, concealed in an organized manner in preparation for smuggling across the border."
The ministry explained that "the seized items were confiscated according to regulations and transferred to the relevant authorities to take the necessary legal measures."
It noted that the operation "comes within the framework of the Ministry of Interior's ongoing efforts to combat smuggling operations, control the borders, and protect national security and stability."
Since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024, the new Syrian administration has been working to stabilize the security situation in the country.
On December 8, 2024, Syrian rebels entered the capital, Damascus, declaring the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime (2000-2024), who had inherited power from his father, Hafez (1970-2000).
