Railway Corruption amounting to 20 billion pounds in Assad era

Investigations by the Central Agency for Control and Inspection have uncovered a financial corruption case within the General Establishment of Syrian Railways dating back to the era of the former regime, with a financial impact exceeding 19 billion Syrian pounds. This comes as part of the Agency's efforts to protect public funds and strengthen its oversight role.

The Agency explained, in information provided to SANA news agency, that an audit conducted into suspicious supply contracts within the Establishment during 2023 and 2024 revealed that contracts for spare parts were awarded at prices containing unjustified discrepancies.

The investigations also revealed, in one aspect, collusion between several employees in the Directorate and a supplier, which led to the disbursement of excess funds amounting to approximately 13 billion Syrian pounds due to illegal price differences.

The Agency estimated the total financial damage at more than 19 billion Syrian pounds, noting that a number of legal measures have been taken, including travel bans against those involved, requiring them to return the embezzled funds, and referring the case to the competent judiciary.

In a related development, the commission revealed last month that financial corruption exceeding 25 million Syrian pounds was uncovered during an inspection tour conducted by one of its teams at a schoolbook warehouse belonging to the General Establishment for Publications in Damascus.
