Syria recovers 23 artifacts from Arab World Institute in Paris

The Arab World Institute in Paris has returned 23 Syrian artifacts that were on loan in 2011 for its permanent exhibition.

The return of these pieces to the National Museum in Damascus coincides with French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Syria, accompanied by an official delegation that includes the president of the Arab World Institute.

Archaeological Treasures Return Home

The recovered collection includes unique pieces dating from prehistoric times to the Islamic era, most notably:

• The "Megi Mari" statue from Tell Hariri (Mari).

• An artifact bearing Safaitic inscriptions.

• A fragment of a Palmyrene frieze depicting a hunting scene.

• A relief inscription in the Palmyrene script.

• Fragments of colored frescoes from Qasr al-Hayr al-Gharbi.

• A wooden door panel carved with floral motifs from Qal'at Ja'bar in Raqqa.

Significance and Context of the Event

These artifacts were originally scheduled to be returned in 2014, but the war and its repercussions prevented this, as their return was previously impossible due to the need to ensure their preservation and security.

This return is of paramount importance today, as it comes amidst the improved security situation in Syria. This reflects the commitment of both parties to restoring cultural relations, which had been suspended for fifteen years, and reaffirms Syria's pivotal role in civilization.

Ongoing Commitment to Heritage Protection

In this context, the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums emphasized that the recovery of Syrian artifacts that left the country through various means remains a top priority. The Directorate also called upon countries, international organizations, and the local community to continue their cooperation to complete this vital task, thus preserving national identity and protecting cultural treasures.
