From the heart of suffering and ruin, the most powerful stories of success and transformation are sometimes forged. This is precisely what the journey of Syrian activist and businesswoman Majd Sharabji, from the city of Daraya in the Damascus countryside, embodies. She transitioned from the depths of detention, torture, and the harshness of exile to a leading economic force, shaping a unique investment landscape that connects Damascus and Doha.
A Prisoner's Story Before the Storm
Nearly 15 years ago, the revolution in Syria placed Majd Sharabji in direct confrontation with the machinery of repression. In 2012, she paid a heavy price, spending seven months in the dungeons and prisons of the Syrian regime, enduring the bitterness of torture. She was later released, devastated by the news of her husband's death under torture, in addition to the arrest of her mother and father.
This cruelty did not break the will of the daughter of Daraya (the City of Grapes). Instead, she and her children sought refuge in Lebanon, then Turkey, where she continued her humanitarian and human rights struggle for years, making the defense of female detainees and the empowerment of women her unwavering path.
This sustained, peaceful struggle culminated in 2015 with her receiving the U.S. State Department's International Women of Courage Award.
From Human Rights Work to the Glory Empire
Majd's journey extended beyond human rights and relief work, venturing into the vast realm of economic leadership. She founded the Glory Holding Group, managing investments that spanned borders and continents.
Her group's portfolio expanded to encompass vital and diverse sectors, ranging from managing gold mines in Turkey and Africa, to establishing major food factories, such as a pasta factory in Burkina Faso, and investing in the education sector through the establishment of Levant Private Schools in both Turkey and Syria.
The Godmother of the Qatari-Syrian Partnership: A Mark on the Economy and Reconstruction
Sharbaji crowned this exceptional journey by emerging as the "godmother" of the Qatari-Syrian Company, with the support and sponsorship of prominent economic figures, including Sheikh Nayef Al Thani and businessman Mubarak Al Hajri, within the Tamim Holding Group.
Last Sunday evening, Majd stepped down to officially inaugurate the significant field event held under the auspices of the Syrian Investment Authority at the Ebla Al-Sham Hotel in the Damascus countryside, announcing the launch of a new era of genuine investments that will inject prosperity and development into the Levant. These investments target strategic sectors including energy, infrastructure, real estate development, tourism and hospitality, and sustainable projects that open up broad horizons for local youth and entrepreneurs.
During the launch ceremony, Sharabji emphasized that this partnership represents a fundamental pillar and a true beginning for the reconstruction and economic empowerment phase. She presented her vision, which combines past experiences with future aspirations, affirming that a resilient will can transform the ashes of tragedy into a glimmer of hope for investment and national unity.
