Damascus, Sept. 25 (SANA) Syria is moving to deepen trade and investment ties with Azerbaijan as Economy and Industry Minister Nidal al-Shaar leads a ministerial delegation to Baku for talks on expanding economic cooperation and opening new markets for Syrian products.
Al-Shaar is also taking part in the second Azerbaijan International Investment Forum, bringing Syria’s efforts to attract investment and build new international economic partnerships into focus.
Qassem Kamel, director of government communications at the Economy and Industry Ministry, said Friday that the visit is aimed at strengthening Syria’s international economic partnerships and improving access to new markets.
Trade and investment talks
The Syrian delegation is scheduled to meet Azerbaijani officials and decision-makers to discuss ways to facilitate exports, increase bilateral trade and explore new areas of investment and economic cooperation, Kamel said in remarks published by the ministry on Telegram.
He said the ministry is continuing efforts to support the private sector and help Syrian businesses enter promising markets and build long-term partnerships, while strengthening the competitiveness of Syrian products.
Investment forum in Baku
The second Azerbaijan International Investment Forum is being held in Baku on Sept. 25 and 26 under the patronage of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, bringing together government officials, investors, international companies and financial institutions.
Organized by Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Economy and the Export and Investment Promotion Agency, AZPROMO, the forum is held under the theme “Restoring Confidence in a Fragmented World: The South Caucasus as a Pillar of Global Connectivity and Investment Stability.”
Its agenda covers the Middle Corridor, green transition, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, infrastructure, free economic zones, critical raw materials, agribusiness, financial cooperation, small and medium-sized enterprises, tourism, real estate and investment in human capital.
Expanding economic links
Economic ties between Syria and Azerbaijan have gained momentum since Baku reopened its embassy in Damascus in February 2025 after a 13-year closure.
The relationship expanded into the energy sector in August 2025, when Azerbaijani natural gas began flowing to Syria through Türkiye.
The two countries have also agreed to establish a Syrian-Azerbaijani Business Council, designed to bring together companies and business leaders, facilitate joint investment projects and strengthen links between the two countries’ business communities.
