Damascus, Nov. 5 (SANA) More than 2.24 million tonnes of goods were transported within and outside Syria during October, carried by 172,848 freight trucks, according to the Directorate of Freight Transport Regulation at the Ministry of Transport.

Khaled al-Kas’ha, director of the Directorate of Freight Transport Regulation, told SANA on Wednesday that domestic shipments amounted to 1,632,344 tonnes, while goods transported outside the country reached 611,244 tonnes between Oct. 1 and 31.

Al-Kas’ha said that 152,473 loaded freight trucks operated within Syria during the month, compared with 20,375 trucks transporting goods outside the country.

He explained that the figures reflect the Directorate’s work in monitoring and regulating freight operations on domestic roads and cross-border routes.

He added that effective regulation requires continuous monitoring of truck movements and cargo weights to ensure compliance with approved standards and limit overloading, which can damage roads and bridges and undermine infrastructure safety and efficiency.

The Directorate recorded 60 roadside monitoring points during October and carried out inspections using 48 fixed and mobile weighbridges to check truck weights and ensure compliance with permitted load limits, al-Kas’ha said

He stressed that stronger oversight along freight routes is essential to protecting the road network from damage caused by excessive loads, improving road safety and maintaining smoother traffic flow.

Al-Kas’ha said regulating freight transport is fundamental to supporting commercial activity and ensuring the smooth movement of goods between Syrian governorates.

The sector’s efficiency is closely linked to facilitating trade, meeting market demand and strengthening Syria’s role in regional transport and transit operations, he added.

The Ministry of Transport, through the Directorate, continues to monitor freight movement and oversee transport operations as part of efforts to regulate the sector and improve related services.

During the first nine months of the year, the total volume of goods transported within and outside Syria reached 25,276,666 tonnes. Domestic shipments accounted for 22,771,640 tonnes, while 2,505,026 tonnes were transported outside the country, according to the Directorate’s figures.
