Activists commemorate first anniversary of Abdul Qadir Saleh death

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian activists on Saturday have commemorated the first anniversary of Abdul Qadir Saleh’s death, the leader of Liwa al-Tawhid who died of wounds he sustained in an air strike on a rebel-held air base in Aleppo last year.

Activists have organized many demonstrations in Aleppo streets to commemorate the anniversary of one of the most powerful rebel commanders, carrying Saleh's pictures and rising signs calling on rebels to unite and surpass rifts.

Saleh, a former businessman from the town of Marea, had been killed during a meeting with other senior figures from Liwa al-Tawhid died on November 17, 2013.

"As an individual, he (Saleh) was very, very important, certainly in the Aleppo area, but increasingly as an individual that many in Syria felt represented the revolution," Charles Lister, an analyst, told the AFP news agency year ago.

"He came from a humble background, was outwardly religious but was very open... and he maintained extremely good relations with almost all groups of all different natures."

According to BBC, a week before his death, Saleh was resolute in an interview with Opposition Orient Television a week before his death, insisting: "We will not let Iran and Hezbollah advance except over our dead bodies."

At the same demonstrations, activists of Aleppo have expressed their anger of the U.N.’s “action plan”, which calls for a temporary halt to the violence in Aleppo.

According to the U.N., the conflict in Syria, which began in March 2011, has claimed more than 190,000 lives, and nearly 11 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance inside the country.  (With BBC)
