French comedian to stand trial over Paris attack comments

A controversial French comedian, Dieudonne M'Bala, is to stand trial after writing a Facebook comment sympathizing with Amedy Coulibaly, French media reported Wednesday.

Paris prosecutors began a criminal investigation on Monday after the comedian wrote on his Facebook page "Je suis Charlie Coulibaly" (I am Charlie Coulibaly). The comment has since been deleted.

Amedy Coulibaly killed four people inside a Jewish supermarket in Paris on Jan. 9.

Dieudonne is one of 54 people who have been held in France for their response to the Paris attacks.

He was previously handed down a €65,000 fine for "anti-Semitic and racial slurs" during his show in 2014. The French government immediately sent a circular to prefects and mayors asking them to ban his show in their cities.

Dieudonne has several convictions stemming from anti-Semitic jokes, holocaust denial and a gesture described as an inverted Nazi salute.

He recently filed an appeal to have the ban on his shows lifted.

Dieudonne has also been sentenced seven times for "inciting racial hatred."
