Syrian rebels, in letter to the Syrian opposition, called for urgent reinforcements and Arms supply for fighters of Qalamoun mountains since Lebanese militias have gripped the bond on rebel enclaves in the strategic border territory.
Qalamoun rebels, in what they called the 'Last Plea' addressed the Syrian National Coalition, said, "we deeply hope that our call may find an immediate respond and more interest unless the situation will get worse and the outcome will be ominous, they said in the statement.
The rebels pointed out to other Lebanese militia fighting alongside with Bashar al-Assad forces and its baked Shiite militia. They say that an armed group is operating under command of veteran Lebanese politician Michel ِِAoun in Qalamoun.
Battles of Qalamoun front erupted throughout the summer of 2013, between pro-regime forces and rebels to concentrate on the Damascus-Homs supply route running through Qalamoun.
The battle, which is crucial for both regime and rebel resupply, focused on contested sections of the M5 highway which runs through Qalamoun, according to the Institute for The Study of War (ISW).
Hezbollah focused on cutting off logistical connections between Arsal, Lebanon, and rebels in Qalamoun. Although Hezbollah and the regime share a common goal of the regime’s survival in Syria, the battle for Qalamoun illustrates the potential for disparity in their strategic priorities, ISW said.
Like other battlefronts throughout Syria, Qalamoun has not been isolated from Salafist groups and al-Qaeda affiliates, which are increasingly dominant on the battlefield. The presence of these groups in the Qalamoun area has caused a shift in rebel operations. Previously, rebel operations in Qalamoun were restricted to disrupting regime supply lines between Damascus and Homs.
