At least 63 fighters loyal to Bashar al-Assad were killed on Friday in a surprise attack by the hardline Islamic State group near Salamiyah city in the eastern countryside of Hama province, activists and monitoring group said.
Pro-ISIS Twitter news feeds said the radical group carried out a massive attack on Syrian regime forces and its allied militia in Sheikh Hilal and al-Hinaita villages north of the predominantly Ismaili city in an attempt to cut regime’s supply route to Aleppo.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said ISIS have stormed Assad army's
checkpoints and bastions in al-Shekh Hilal in an attempt to cut the road
between Khanaser and al-Salamiyah.
On Saturday, State-run media said tens of the attack victims were mourned to their final resting place.
The Syria conflict began as a peaceful movement that morphed into a bloody war that has killed more than 220,000 people and forced half the population to flee their homes.
