Islamist rebels wage major offensive north of Aleppo


Al Qaeda’s Syria wing backed by Islamist rebels on Monday have launched a major military operation in the northern countryside of Aleppo,  seeking to recapture villages were controlled by Syrian regime forces early this month, activists said.

The Nusra Front begun its offensive by an explosives-laden vehicle which has exploded and killed several soldiers in the town of Duwayr al-Zeitoun north of Aleppo, Zaman al-Wasl reporter said.

Rebels have also surrounded Bashkoy town, cutting a supply route to Bashar al-Assad forces.

The offensive is carried out by Nusra Front, the newly-formed Battalions of Suqour al-Sham, Ansar al-Din Front and al-Shamiya Front.

Aleppo province is divided between the Syria military, backed by militia, and a range of insurgent groups including Nusra Front, Islamist brigades and Western-backed rebels.

The Syria conflict began as a peaceful movement that morphed into a bloody war that has killed more than 220,000 people and forced half the population to flee their homes.
