Free Syrian Army officers have joined key Islamist rebel group in Eastern Ghouta suburbs under leadership of Zahran Alloush, commander said in video statement Monday.
Number of Syrian army defectors in a remarkable move have formed a new military council in the embattled district of Damascus as well they announced joining the Unified Military Command of Eastern Ghouta which is a coalition of mainstream Islamist groups including powerful Islam Army east Damascus.
Col. Ammar al-Nemer, the new head of the military council, will be the vice commander of the General Command, the statement said.
Col. Khalid Habous head of the old military council said the new one is no more than a coupe sponsored by Islamist rebels.
In his turn, Alloush, Islam Army's commander, has urged all defectors to join the new council in order to form a new alliance similar to the Fatah Army in the north to liberate Damascus as northern front rebels did in Idlib last Saturday.
Local activists have praised the recent development, saying it will intensify efforts to have qualified military units similar to the regular army.
Syria's four-year-old war has killed more than 220,000 people and forced millions out of their homes.
