Activists say Syrian regime attacked historic church in Hasakah

Conflicting reports over who is the responsible for the partial damage of a historic church in Hasakah province northeast Syria as activists accuse Syrian regime and the latter says Islamic State's terrorists who have carried out the explosion on Sunday.

State-run news agency (SANA) said Sunday the radical Islamic State group had blown up the church of the Virgin Mary in Tal Nasri village in the western countryside of Hasakah province, as the Christian community was celebrating the Easter.

The Assyrian Human Rights Network said ISIS fighters had detonated one of the church towers Sunday morning. But Hasakah's Youth Union said Syrian air force who had dropped barrel bomb on the church to cause a strife and to increase the panic and fear among the Syrian minority.

The Church of the Virgin Mary was built in 1934 and is considered one of three main churches in Tal Nasri village, which is located to the south of Tal Tamr town that was earlier overrun by ISIS.

This is not ISIS’s first attack on a religious site, as the terrorist organization’s fighters have intentionally destroyed many Muslim and Christian worship places and other religious sites and shrines in areas they took over, SANA said.
