Syrian government's former employees, including teachers, have been facing an extraordinary situation in territories controlled by the extremist Islamic State group northeast Syria since they have obliged to 'repent' their work with the Syrian state to avoid death and torture.

The Islamic State (also known as ISIS or ISIL) has imposed 'repentance' as a condition on former employees of the Syrian regime institutions, including the education sector, if they want to avoid death and live in safe.

ISIS said all teachers are "Kafara" infidels because they worked for infidel regime and they should repent otherwise will be in front of the Islamic court.

ISIS, in a circular issued at the end of March, called on all employees of the teaching staff to come to their own offices in Shaddadi town in the countryside of al-Hasakah to pledge Altoba (repentance) for their previous work, and to receive explanatory manuals on the subject."

According to The Week, all schools in Raqqa and other ISIS-held cities must teach Islamic law, and students who refuse face punishment up to and including death. Females and males are split up, and girls and women have to wear full burqas, with only their eyes showing. Banned from schools are music, social studies, history, arts, sports, philosophy, psychology, and all mention of Syria or Bashar al-Assad.
